What is a fundamental school?

Mary W. Jackson Elementary Fundamental School serves students in grades K-5. The fundamental schools follow the same curriculum as the other Hampton City Schools. Parents sign a fundamental school contract upon registration. Students are accepted by application on a first-come, first-served space-available basis. Siblings of enrolled students are accepted into the school through fifth grade. Registrations are accepted throughout the year. Applications for the kindergarten waiting list are accepted beginning August 1 of the year the child turns 4. Students must be 5 by September 30 to attend kindergarten.  No transportation is provided for students enrolled at Mary Jackson. We have received numerous awards for outstanding achievement and offer opportunities such as a STEM lab, clubs and student participation.

The age requirement for kindergarten entrance in Virginia is that children will have celebrated their 5th birthday by September 30. Upon parent request, any Hampton child who will celebrate his/her 5th birthday in October or November may be eligible to register for kindergarten pending the outcome of an evaluation. This evaluation is administered by the Hampton City Schools Language Arts Department.

For the 2024-2025 school year, students must be 5 on or before September 30, 2024. Parents with children who were born during the months of October or November 2019 can call Virginia Saloka at 727-2130 to schedule an entrance evaluation appointment.

Please note that the Language Arts Department will make the final decision regarding the child's eligibility status.
